Playing poker is not all about luck. You need to learn new tricks of the game and improve your skills continuously if you want to become a professional player or simply win at any poker games. Even professional poker players keep learning new things to improve their game. Here are several effective ways to keep up to your game:

1) Learn hand rankings and the odds of possible poker hands – The best hand possible in poker is a straight flush, five successive cards of the same suit being royal flush as the best possible straight flush. A royal flush consists of 10-J-Q-K-A of any suit, as long as the five cards have the same suit. The other hands possible are four-of-a-kind, full house, flush, straight, three-of-a-kind, two-pair and one-pair. However, be aware that there are around 3 million possible hands in a single deck, but the odds of good poker hands can vary. Generally, the possibility of a hand with a straight flush is only .0015%, but the chances of having a pair is around 42%.

2) Understand the rules, learn the terms and master how to use them both by playing. Make sure you know when to bet, check or fold. Once you master these three options for betting, you can ensure winning whenever you have a good hand and avoid losing money by folding when you have a bad hand.

3) Decide the cards you wish to keep – Make sure to prepare for the draw by figuring out which cards you want to use. Most advanced poker players refrain from drawing more than two cards since it usually means you don’t have a strong hand, reducing your chances to make a successful bluff.

4) The bet changes the game – Understand that as the stakes increase, the players become more aggressive and the game chances. For instance, players in a game of nickel-ante don’t bluff at all because the opponents are unlikely to fold with low stakes. Bluffing becomes more effective when the bets increase.

5) Learn your own techniques – Many people lose in poker because they unconsciously create patterns and send out messages through body language, which other players use to determine if you have a weak or strong hand. Be aware of your patterns and avoid them as much as possible.

6) Study your opponents – Poker is all about people, so observe your opponents and pinpoint their “tells”, which may reveal some information about their current hands. Does your opponent talk endlessly when excited? Does he make weird hand gestures when agitated? Observe their body language and remember these signals throughout the game, so you can use it to your advantage.

7) Practice, practice, practice – Whether you wish to play online or in your private room at home, make sure you play the game. many online poker rooms have games without bets, but if you wish to hone your skills using real money, you can choose an online room that offers these games against advanced poker players.

Of course, never bet on money you’re going to miss. Make sure you decide the amount of money you can afford to lose before you join a poker game. This way, when you reach the maximum amount, you know when to stop playing.

Prephia is a variation of five-card stud poker. As such, players keep five cards – four cards up and one down. All cards that are down are wild, so if you have a five down, then all the fives in your hand are also wild. Prephia is played high/low; meaning, the player with the high hand splits the pot with the player with the best low hand. Low hand is considered as the worst poker hand – 2, 3, 4, 5, 7.

Before starting a game, you should collect the ante bet from every player. The dealer would then give one card down to each player. The dealer would then give a card face up to the player on his left, who would then choose if he’d like to take that card, get a card from the deck or receive a facedown card. If the player chooses to go for a facedown card, he will then have two down cards and decide which one to turn face up. Be aware that this decision is important because once you choose a facedown card, all cards like it would be wild for you.

After all players have taken their second card, you can now start a round of betting. The highest hand would first place his bets or decide to check, then the players would continue the betting. The bets are made clockwise around the table.

Once all bets are placed, the dealer would give the third, fourth and fifth cards to each player, allowing them to choose from a facedown card or an exposed card. Whenever a player decides to take a down card, he would be given a chance to flip any of his down cards up. As a result, he would be changing his wild card.

A final betting would then take place and players would then declare if they’re going low or high by simply placing one (for low) or two (for high) chips secretly in their hand. Once everyone has chips on their hands, all players would simultaneously reveal if they’re going high or low. Determine the winners and the pot is split between two players – half to the high hand and half to the low hand.

Seven-card stud poker is a famous variation of poker usually played in online rooms, casinos and private poker rooms. Each player would receive seven cards (four cards face up and three facedown cards), but only choose five of them in creating a poker hand. Seven-card stud poker involves several betting rounds with different betting limits. The betting structure could be a spread limit (wherein the players could place a bet in the ‘allowable range’ such as from $1 to $10) and fixed limit (wherein players can bet on any of the two amounts (such as $1/$2) that has been decided before the game). All bets are placed only in specific times throughout the game.

Begin playing seven-card stud by placing an ante bet. All players that wishes to play in the round requires to place an ante bet before being given two cards down and one card up. The one with the lowest card shown needs to place another bet, then each player (going clockwise) should call or raise the bet if they want to stay in the hand. Anyone who doesn’t wish to make a bet can fold his cards.

Each player receives a fourth card face up and another betting round takes place. However, the person with the best hand shown would start the betting, placing at least the minimum allowed amount. The players are given a fifth card face up and bets would be placed again; this process is repeated until each player has seven cards. Although bets are placed after all players receive an extra card, the minimum bet usually increases to a higher amount after the players receive their 5th card.

After the last bets have been placed, all remaining players must reveal their hands and whoever has the highest-ranking hand wins the pot. The pot is split if two or more players have matching hands.

All variations of poker uses hand rankings, so it is important to understand them to have a good future at poker, whether you plan to play online, on your weekly poker night with friends or at a casino. After you’ve understood and mastered how rankings work, you can make an informed decision whether you would play a hand or not. Since all poker games follow the same hand rankings, you only need to learn one kind of hand ranking. Here are the standard hand rankings listed from highest to lowest:

1) Royal flush – The highest possible hand in poker, royal flush consists of an ace straight flush, such as 10-Jack-Queen-King-Ace in the same suit.
2) Straight flush – This hand consists of five consecutive cards all in the same suit, which contains a flush and a straight, such as 4-5-6-7-8 or 9-10-J-Q-K.
3) Four-of-a-kind – This hand is a combination of four cards of the same rank, such as Q-Q-Q-Q or 5-5-5-5 and any unmatched card.
4) Full house – This hand consists of three cards with the same rank and two pairs of identical ranking cards, such as 4-4-4-9-9 or J-J-J-2-2 and so on. If two or more players have a full house on the same round, the player with the higher ranked three-of-a-kind wins the game.
5) Flush – This hand consists of five cards of the same suit. It can be five different diamonds, hearts, clubs or spades. If two or more players have a flush hand at the same time, the one with the higher-ranking card wins.
6) Straight – This hand consists of five consecutive cards with different suits, such as 8-9-10-J-Q or 4-5-6-7-8 and so on. If other players also have straight hands, the player with the highest-ranking cards wins.
7) Two-pair – As its name suggest, this hand consists of two sets of the same ranking cards and one unmatched card, such as 2-2-4-4-5 or Q-Q-9-9-4 and so on.
One-pair – This hand consists of three unmatched cards and two cards of the same rank, such as A-A-4-6-8, J-J-9-8-7 and so on.
9) High card – When none of the players are able to make any of the poker hand rankings, they each have a high card and the one with the higher-ranked card wins.

The highest-ranking card is Ace, but it can also be used as the lowest for straights, if used as A-2-3-4-5. Regardless of the number of cards given to a player, a poker hand only consists of five cards. No poker game uses wildcards, jokers and other cards aside from the 52 standard cards on a deck. Make sure you understand and master all poker hand rankings before you play poker.
