Poker Tips and Techniques
Prephia is a variation of five-card stud poker. As such, players keep five cards – four cards up and one down. All cards that are down are wild, so if you have a five down, then all the fives in your hand are also wild. Prephia is played high/low; meaning, the player with the high hand splits the pot with the player with the best low hand. Low hand is considered as the worst poker hand – 2, 3, 4, 5, 7.
Before starting a game, you should collect the ante bet from every player. The dealer would then give one card down to each player. The dealer would then give a card face up to the player on his left, who would then choose if he’d like to take that card, get a card from the deck or receive a facedown card. If the player chooses to go for a facedown card, he will then have two down cards and decide which one to turn face up. Be aware that this decision is important because once you choose a facedown card, all cards like it would be wild for you.
After all players have taken their second card, you can now start a round of betting. The highest hand would first place his bets or decide to check, then the players would continue the betting. The bets are made clockwise around the table.
Once all bets are placed, the dealer would give the third, fourth and fifth cards to each player, allowing them to choose from a facedown card or an exposed card. Whenever a player decides to take a down card, he would be given a chance to flip any of his down cards up. As a result, he would be changing his wild card.
A final betting would then take place and players would then declare if they’re going low or high by simply placing one (for low) or two (for high) chips secretly in their hand. Once everyone has chips on their hands, all players would simultaneously reveal if they’re going high or low. Determine the winners and the pot is split between two players – half to the high hand and half to the low hand.
